Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League campaign could have started in a more positive fashion as they visited Tottenham at Wembley, coming away with a damaging, if a little undeserved 3-1 defeat in a group that’s going to be very tough.
The visiting Germans actually had the majority of the positive play at Wembley, but their defensive vulnerabilities were taken advantage of and now they face the task of hosting the Champions League holders on Tuesday.
Hosting Real Madrid is by no means an unknown factor for the Bundesliga giants though. They were drawn in the same group as them last year as well, eventually finishing top of their group with Madrid getting the last laugh as they retained their trophy against Juventus whilst Dortmund went out at the hands of Monaco.
So far this season Borussia Dortmund have looked an impressive side, their trip to London aside. They have won five, drawn one, and lost one of their seven competitive games, scoring 20 goals and conceding four at the other end. Despite this improved looking defence, I can’t see them keeping Real Madrid at bay though.
Both of last season’s games promised goals aplenty with the attacking talent that was on display, and they didn’t disappoint. Both group games ended 2-2, and for Dortmund it was the usual suspect behind their success. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang scored in both games, and after his hat-trick at the weekend, the pacey forward now has eight goals in seven appearances this season. Last year he bagged 38 goals between the Bundesliga and Champions League as well, so backing him to find the net looks a great choice for our goalscorer predictions.
Real Madrid haven’t had such a successful start to the season, and were shockingly beaten at home to Real Betis last week. They have won four, drawn two, and lost one of their seven outings since the league campaign began, but their 3-0 win over APOEL was as comfortable as you would expect from the European champions.
This promises to be a high scoring affair from two incredibly talented attacking units. Borussia Dortmund have seen four or more goals in an impressive six of their last seven Champions League games, whilst Real Madrid have in eight of their last 13 in the competition. This makes odds of 1/1 for Over 3.5 Goals look an excellent value bet, so we’re going for that.
We’re also backing Borussia Dortmund Over 1.5 Team Goals at 5/6, due to the fact they have scored two or more in seven of their last ten at home in the Champions League. This, along with a 2-2 correct score predictions, looks a great choice.
